- Samen met het zelfportret van Joseph Octave van der Donckt vormt dit miniatuurportret een pendant dat door de schilder in 1789 geschonken werd aan de Brugse academie voor schone kunsten. Waarschijnlijk heeft van der Donckt zijn voorganger niet naar het leven geportretteerd, maar steunde hij zich op het portret van De Cock dat tien jaar eerder door Joseph-Benoît Suvée geschilderd werd. De voormalige directeur van de Brugse academie wordt in buste voorgesteld tegen een neutrale lichtbruine achtergrond en kijkt de toeschouwer recht in de ogen. Dit bevallige miniatuurportret werd door kunstkenners met succes onthaald toen het tentoongesteld was in de vergaderzaal van de Brugse academie.
