Description:
De harples van Théodore-Joseph Geirnaert heeft het karakter van een conversation picture of conversation piece. De Engelse termen worden gebruikt voor kleine groepsportretjes die tegelijk ook een genretafereel uitbeelden. Een conversation picture vertelt geen anekdote, maar illustreert de onderlinge relaties van personages en hun omgeving in een informele sfeer. Hier wordt de toeschouwer als het ware uitgenodigd om samen met het gezin de harples te volgen en tegelijk de gecultiveerde levensstijl en het modieuze interieur in empirestijl te bewonderen. De harples behoort nog tot de neoclassicistische periode van de schilder. Nadien zou hij zich volledig toeleggen op volkse taferelen.
