Description:

In de negentiende eeuw was Gent de meest geïndustrialiseerde stad van Vlaanderen, wat onder meer door de aanleg van het kanaal Gent-Terneuzen werd versneld. Het schilderij van Gustave Den Duyts Panoramisch gezicht op de stad Gent toont de stad gezien vanaf de aanzet van het kanaal, nog voor het graven van de voorhaven tussen 1882 en 1886. Links zien we een paar vrachtkarren naast de kade waarlangs een boot gemeerd ligt. Op de rechteroever reizen de fabrieksschoorstenen naast de historische torens van Gent. De schilder speelt hier de oplichtende hemel uit tegen de grauwe voorstad. De verf is met korte nerveuze toetsen aangebracht waardoor het geheel een impressionistisch karakter krijgt.
