- Na zijn debuut op de Gentse salon van 1871 kende Jean Delvin al snel succes als figuur-, portret- en dierenschilder. Garnaalvissers in Nieuwpoort kan model staan voor de vroege carrière van de kunstenaar, die gekenmerkt werd door een weinig bruuskerend realisme. Het schilderij weerspiegelt de burgerlijke tijdsgeest omstreeks 1880, die het anekdotische, herkenbare karakter van dergelijke scènes bijzonder apprecieerde. Ook naast de driejaarlijkse salons was Delvin succesvol. Nauwelijks 28 jaar oud werd hij docent aan de Gentse academie, naderhand zelfs directeur.
