- Alfred Verwee werkte bij voorkeur in de omgeving van Knokke-Heist en schilderde haast uitsluitend dieren in het vlakke polderland. Karakteristiek voor het realistische oeuvre van de kunstenaar is de manier waarop hij voornamelijk runderen op een bijzonder tastbare en waarheidsgetrouwe manier weergaf. In het schilderij Gevecht tussen twee jonge stieren krijgt deze benadering zelfs een heroïsch karakter. Verwee hield van zuivere kleuren en een helder licht waardoor hij als een voorloper van het Belgische impressionisme kan worden beschouwd.
