Description:
Rond 1889 kwam Emile Claus in de ban van het Franse impressionisme en verbleef gedurende drie winters in Parijs. De ijsvogels ontstond in die periode. Het schilderij kan dan ook beschouwd worden als een overgangswerk tussen zijn naturalistische periode en het op Franse leest geschoeide impressionisme dat hij vanaf de jaren 1890 toepaste. Een echo van het naturalisme is te zien in de waarheidsgetrouwe weergave van de kinderen, die hun spel hebben afgebroken en met hun ijsstoel de oever op klauteren. Het rozige avondlicht en de bredere toets kondigen dan weer het Belgische luminisme aan, waarvan Claus in de volgende decennia een van de leidende figuren werd.
