- Hoewel Jean Delvin vooral als kunstpedagoog bekendheid geniet, neemt hij intensief aan het tentoonstellingsleven deel. Op deze tentoonstellingen toont hij vooral zijn talent als animalier. De thematiek van de corrida met zijn stierengevechten, banderillero’s en picadores overheerst, zowel in tekeningen als in schilderijen. Het accent legt hij vooral op de edele kracht van de dieren, waarbij torment en beweging domineren. In Paardengevecht speelt hij met verschillende plans van licht en schaduw. Geschilderd met een hard, zuiders palet straalt uit de stevige factuur de invloed die Delvin ondergaat van het impressionisme. Op de Gentse salon van 1902 toont de vooraanstaande Brusselse criticus Octave Maus zich onder de indruk van het warme koloriet in het schilderij: “Ce qui intéresse celui-ci c’est, avant tout, le papillotage des tons chauds dans la lumière, les oppositions vigoureuses de couleur, l’éclat du soleil sur une scène pittoresque”. In haar exemplaar van de tentoonstellingscatalogus beschrijft de schilderes Anna De Weert, ooit leerlinge van Delvin, het schilderij als “le clou [du salon]”.
