Description:

Christus in het graf is het middenstuk van een predella. In de Spaanse kunst is de predella – het onderste deel van een altaarstuk – vaak onderverdeeld in aparte scènes, van elkaar gescheiden door gebeeldhouwde zuiltjes. Tot welk altaarstuk dit paneeltje behoorde, kon tot nog toe niet worden achterhaald. In voorstellingen van de graflegging wordt Christus meestal ten grave gedragen door Jozef van Arimatea en Nikodemus, vergezeld van Maria, Johannes de evangelist en Maria Magdalena. Die figuren zijn hier vervangen door een treurende engel. Daardoor verdwijnt het verhalende element en krijgt het tafereel een meer sacraal karakter. De uitbeelding van de graflegging met een of meer engelen is afkomstig uit Italië en verwant aan het thema van De man van Smarten. De invloed van Italië zien we ook in het landschap, dat herinnert aan het werk van Giotto.
