- Jan Boeckhorst kreeg zijn opleiding in het atelier van Jordaens. In 1633 werd hij vrijmeester in het Sint-Lucasgilde van Antwerpen. Hij genoot heel wat aanzien in de Antwerpse kunst-middens en werkte geregeld samen met Peter Paul Rubens en Frans Snijders. Van de hand van Boeckhorst zijn onder meer enkele ‘modelli’ voor een mythologische reeks wandtapijten over de geschiedenis van Apollo bewaard. De Gentse olieverfschets Apollo en Python is er een van. Deze schets geeft een goed beeld van de levendige en expressieve stijl van de kunstenaar. Het verhaal van de Griekse zonnegod Apollo en het slangenmonster Python vinden we terug bij Ovidius. Om zich meester te maken van het orakel van Delphi doodde Apollo, enkele dagen na zijn geboorte, de Python die het orakel bewaakte en de omgeving terroriseerde. Trots op zijn eerste heldendaad liet de jonge god zich tegenover de liefdesgod Cupido smalend uit over de kunst van het boogschieten. Hiervoor strafte Cupido hem met een ongelukkige liefde voor de nimf Daphne.
