Description:

In De bewening van Christus van Cornelis Engebrechtsz. van Leyden zijn verscheidene episodes uit het Lijdensverhaal van Christus gelijktijdig in beeld gebracht. Achteraan zien we de kruisafneming op de berg Golgotha en de terugkeer van de soldaten en het volk naar Jeruzalem. Op de voorgrond het dode lichaam van Christus aan de voeten van zijn moeder Maria. Johannes ondersteunt het hoofd van Christus terwijl Maria Magdalena en twee heilige vrouwen neerknielen bij de dode. Op de grond naast Christus liggen de passiesymbolen: de doornenkroon en de nagels waarmee hij werd gekruisigd. Van Engebrechtsz. van Leyden zijn hoofdzakelijk verhalende bijbeltaferelen bekend. Het schilderij dat we hier zien is vermoedelijk het middenpaneel van een triptiek en is afkomstig uit het dominicaner klooster van Gent. De rijke gewaden, de decoratieve plooienval en de weergave van de ruimte in opeenvolgende plans zijn kenmerkend voor de laatgotische schilderkunst van het einde van de vijftiende en het begin van de zestiende eeuw.
