- Frans I Pourbus, zoon van Pieter Pourbus en vader van Frans II Pourbus, behoort tot een befaamde Brugse kunstenaarsfamilie. Naast landschappen en portretten schilderde Pourbus bij voorkeur religieuze taferelen in een dynamische en italianiserende stijl. Als portrettist munt Frans I Pourbus uit door een uitzonderlijke verfijning in de penseelvoering en een voorname idealisering van zijn modellen. Hij wordt beschouwd als een van de beste portretschilders van zijn generatie. Dit portret uit 1581 is het laatst gekende, gesigneerde en gedateerde werk van de meester. De identiteit van de vrouw is niet bekend. Zij is gekleed naar de rijke burgermode van die tijd in zwart fluweel met parels en witte met gouddraad doorstikte zijde. Op het hoofd draagt zij een witte vleugelmuts, haar gelaat elegant omlijst met een fijne pijpkraag.
