Description:

Op het einde van zijn leven werkte Charles-François Daubigny veel in Villerville in Normandië, waar hij verschillende strandgezichten schilderde. Ook het landschap in de omgeving droeg zijn belangstelling weg. Uit Weilanden in Graves bij Villerville blijkt Daubigny’s interesse voor de vluchtige aspecten van de natuur. Het schilderij is schetsmatig opgebouwd, in vlugge penseelstreken, waarbij de kunstenaar de details achterwege heeft gelaten. Het koloriet is diepdonker, de sfeer dreigend. Deze expressieve werkwijze kondigt een nieuwe richting in de landschapschilderkunst aan, een richting die een decennium later door Vincent van Gogh wordt uitgewerkt. De Nederlandse schilder had trouwens een grote bewondering voor de schilders van Barbizon; Millet en Daubigny beschouwde hij als inspirerende voorbeelden.
