- Tijgers betwisten een prooi wordt beschouwd als een van de hoogtepunten van de Belgische animalier-beeldhouwkunst. Jacques de Lalaings studie voor de beeldengroep gaat terug naar het midden van de jaren 1880 toen hij werkte aan een project voor een verlichtingsmast, tentoongesteld op de Brusselse Salon van 1887. Aan de voet van de mast positioneerde hij toen vechtende tijgers. In tegenstelling tot de meeste animalier-sculpteurs van het fin de siècle bestudeerde hij de dieren niet in de Antwerpse Zoo. Om de natuur zo dicht mogelijk te benaderen kocht hij zelf een tijger. Zijn hang naar het exotische had De Lalaing gemeen met zijn vriend Fernand Scribe. Door zijn toedoen werden in opdracht van de stad Gent twee beeldengroepen van De Lalaing gegoten, die beide in het Citadelpark werden opgesteld: De Leie en de Schelde en Tijgers betwisten een prooi.
