- Het schilderij Verhuring van paarden en ezels uit 1854 toont een in die tijd populaire, toeristische attractie. Gezadelde rijdieren staan klaar om een ritje te maken. De paarden zien er goed verzorgd uit en staan beschut onder een tent. De ezels daarentegen, staan kort aangebonden in de zon en lijken afgeleefd. Joseph Stevens schilderde wel vaker en met succes de ‘verschillende klassen’ onder de dieren. Zijn grootste bekendheid genoot hij door een reeks schilderijen met als thema de hond: als straathond, als trekdier of geliefd huisdier. Daarom noemde Charles Baudelaire hem ook de ‘portrettist van de honden’. Samen met Charles Degroux was hij een van de vroegste realistische schilders in België.
