- De doornenkroning is een episode uit het lijdensverhaal van Christus. De compositie is vrij traditioneel: centraal zien we Christus, zittend op een steen, de handen geboeid en het lichaam overdekt met wonden. Gelaten ondergaat Hij de bespotting en folteringen van zijn beulen. Twee van hen drukken kruiselings stokken op zijn hoofd. Dit is een metafoor voor Christus in de wijnpers, waarbij Christus als een mystieke druiventros wordt ‘uitgeperst’. Tevens is dit een duidelijke verwijzing naar de Eucharistie. De volkse, bijna karikaturale types van de beulen en het felle kleurgebruik zijn typisch voor de Duitse middeleeuwse kunst. Het werk herinnert aan Lucas Cranach, een van de belangrijkste Duitse kunstenaars, aan wie het werk ooit werd toegeschreven.
