Description:
Uit angst voor koning Herodes vlucht Jozef met Maria en Jezus naar Egypte. Pas na de dood van de koning keert de Heilige Familie terug naar Nazareth. Dit lezen we in het evangelie van Matteüs. In de loop der eeuwen werd aan het verhaal een aantal details toegevoegd. Vanaf de late middeleeuwen was het thema in de schilderkunst erg populair. Hier zien we de rust tijdens de vlucht naar Egypte en het moment waarop Maria haar Kind voedt. De soepel gedrapeerde mantel van Maria omsluit moeder en kind in een centrale driehoek. Het zachte clair-obscur en het wazige licht dat de tengere, kleine Mariafiguur omgeeft, zijn kenmerkend voor de stijl van Adriaen Isenbrant. Isenbrant was één van de belangrijkste kunstenaars in Brugge in de eerste helft van de zestiende eeuw.
