Uit de periode vóór Jan van Eyck zijn heel weinig voorbeelden van paneelschilderkunst bekend. Het vierlobbige medaillon met de voorstelling van een graflegging illustreert de overgang van miniatuurschilderkunst – in het bijzonder door het formaat en de decoratieve achtergrond – naar paneelschilderkunst.
