- Filippo della Valle maakte carrière als beeldhouwer te Rome. Op vraag van Clemens XII sculpteerde hij de Gematigheid met twee putti voor de Corsini kapel van Sint-Jan van Lateranen. Geboren als prins Lorenzo Corsini in 1652 regeert hij als paus Clemens XII van 173 tot aan zijn dood in 1740. De blik van de geportretteerde maakt duidelijk dat Clemens XII blind geworden was. Het saneren van de financiën en het inrichten van een publiek loterij behoren tot zijn belangrijkste pauselijke verwezenlijkingen. De opbrengsten investeerde hij in wetenschappen en kunsten. Hij liet de Trevi fontein bouwen. Della Valle ontwierp de allegorische figuren voor Overvloed en Gezondheid, die de zeegod Neptunus flankeren.
