Description:
In de Zuidelijke Nederlanden zijn voorbeelden van religieuze beeldhouwkunst uit de zeventiende eeuw nog vaak in de kerken zelf te bewonderen. Tijdens de beeldenstorm gingen vele originele gotische, rijkversierde altaren, koor- en preekgestoelten en afzonderlijke beelden verloren. Ze werden veelal vervangen door barokke sculptuur. De herkomst van het meer dan levensgrote beeld van Hiëronymus is niet bekend. Het stelt de heilige halfnaakt voor, rechtopstaand, met een papyrusrol in de rechterhand. De heilige Hiëronymus was een geëerd kerkvader. Hij maakte een Latijnse vertaling van de bijbel, die hier door de papyrusrol wordt gesymboliseerd. Later trok hij zich terug in de woestijn. De doodskop in zijn linkerhand, symbool van de vergankelijkheid, herinnert aan zijn kluizenaarschap. Het beeld wordt toegeschreven aan Artus II Quellinus, die vooral in Antwerpen werkzaam was.
