- Na een opleiding in de westerse schilderkunst aan de Universiteit voor Schone Kunsten en Muziek van Tokyo, kiest de Japanse kunstenaar Torajiro Kojima (1881-1929) definitief voor een impressionistische beeldtaal. Zijn werk wordt bekroond en zelfs gekocht door de keizerlijke familie. Met de steun van de familie Ohara vertrekt hij in 1908 naar Parijs. Een jaar later schrijft hij zich in aan de Academie voor Schone Kunsten van Gent. Onder leiding van de toenmalige directeur Jean Delvin worden hier vele schilders opgeleid en komt hij in contact met Emile Claus die regelmatig de Gentse Academie bezoekt. In 1912 keert Kojima terug naar Japan. Vanaf 1920 zal hij nog meermaals naar Europa terugkeren op vraag van Magosaburo Ohara om Westerse kunst aan te kopen. Zo brengt hij werken van o.a. Claus, Delvin, Monet, Matisse, Marquet en Rodin naar Japan. Dit wordt het hart van de collectie van het Ohara Museum of Art in Kurashiki, het eerste museum voor moderne Westerse kunst in Japan, geopend in 1929. Ook Kojima's schilderijen worden er getoond.
