- Théodore Fourmois was een van de eerste schilders in België om zich te verzetten tegen de academische landschapschilderkunst. Hij streefde naar een volkomen integratie van mens en dier in het landschap, en hechtte veel belang aan het schilderen in en naar de natuur. Hoewel hij zich in zijn werken vanuit de natuur liet inspireren, waren zij deels ook ontleend aan de fantasie. De kunstenaar behoorde nog tot de romantische schilders, maar door zijn directe benadering van de natuur kan hij als wegbereider van de 19de-eeuwse Belgische landschapschilderkunst worden beschouwd. De monumentale bomen in Landschap in de Dauphiné doen sterk denken aan voorbeelden van de Hollandse 17de-eeuwse landschapschilders.
