- Description:
- De meest originele Belgische landschapschilder uit de jaren 1860-1870 is ongetwijfeld Hippolyte Boulenger (1837-1874). Halverwege de jaren 1860 treedt hij op de voorgrond met een voor België nieuw soort landschappen, onstuimig geschilderd, zwaar in de verf gezet en onafgewerkt. De getourmenteerde schilder zoekt zijn toevlucht in een intense natuurbeleving. Hij heeft een voorliefde voor uitzonderlijke weersomstandigheden, zoals onweders, wat hem nog met de Romantiek verbindt. Afhankelijk van zijn gemoedsgesteldheid varieert zijn werk van serene, realistische schilderijen tot dramatische composities die het expressionisme aankondigen. Op de Brusselse Salon van 1866 lanceert Boulenger bij wijze van grap en naar analogie van de school van Barbizon de benaming 'school van Tervuren'. In dit kleine dorpje in de bosrijke omgeving ten zuidoosten van Brussel, trekken Boulenger en enkele andere landschapschilders, zoals Alphonse Asselberghs en Théodore Baron, zich vaak terug om direct naar de natuur te schilderen.
