- De Franse beeldhouwer Emile Bourdelle is vooral gekend om zijn klassiek geïnspireerde en monumentale beeldhouwwerken. Daarnaast is hij de auteur van een aantal treffende portretten waarvan deze buste één der bekendste voorbeelden is. Dr. Koeberlé was een chirug uit de Elzas. Voor de eerste wereldoorlog was hij werkzaam in het in die tijd Duitse Straatsburg. In 1914 leerde de kunstenaar de bejaarde dokter kennen. Hij portretteerde hem op een tijdloze manier, gedrapeerd als een Griekse of Romeinse patriciër.
