Description:

Reeds tijdens zijn studiejaren aan de Brusselse Académie Royale des Beaux-Arts tekende Ensor enkele bijbelse taferelen met zwart krijt of houtskool op bladen van vrij groot formaat. Tot die reeks behoort "Christus en de kreupelen". Rond 1885-1886 herwerkte hij de tekening, waarbij hij de vroeger gearceerde partijen grotendeels wegwerkte, en speels ophoogde met penseel. Het aldus ontstane lichteffect vinden we ook terug in Ensors reeks “De aureolen van Christus”. Daarnaast kleurde hij eveneens rond 1886 de oorspronkelijke figuren in felle kleuren en voorzag hij ze van potsierlijke hoofddeksels en attributen. De traditionele titel van de tekening is verwarrend omdat het in wezen gaat om de miraculeuze genezing van de lamme.
