- Tijdens de Franse Revolutie en het Empire stelt Jacques-Louis David zijn werk ten dienste van respectievelijk Maximilien de Robespierre en Napoleon. Zijn liefde voor groots opgevatte, beredeneerde en evenwichtige composities leent zich uitermate goed voor propagandistische doeleinden. Maar deze controversiële thematiek maakt Parijs voor David een gevaarlijke plek na het herstel van de monarchie en noopt hem te verhuizen naar Brussel. Davids Brusselse periode luidt stilistisch sterke veranderingen in. Zijn koloriet wordt intenser en de poging om het ideale met het realistische te combineren opvallender. Enkele weken voor zijn dood schenkt Jacques-Louis David vier tekeningen aan de Gentse Société Royale des Beaux-Arts (Museum voor Schone Kunsten Gent, inv. 1933-E-1 tot 1933-3-4). De kunstenaar exposeert eerder tweemaal in het Gentse Stadhuis, op tentoonstellingen ingericht door de kring. De krijttekeningen illustreren de late stijl van David die de Oudheid in een meer realistische weergave her-actualiseert. Typerend zijn het zware modelé en het accent op het reliëf en de schaduwen.
