- De voor Minne typerende omarming en verstrengeling zien we ook in de Man beweent zijn dode hinde uit 1896. De liggende figuur beschermt tegelijk zichzelf en het dode dier. Net als in De Verloren Zoon legt Minne de gevoelsuitdrukking niet enkel ter hoogte van het gelaat, maar maakt hij elk onderdeel van de compositie even expressief. De man geeft zich volledig over aan zijn smart. In zijn totale liefde keert hij als het ware terug naar de aarde en wordt hij één met de dood. De houding van de man heeft Minne waarschijnlijk aan Rodin ontleend. Typisch voor de Gentse kunstenaar is echter de arme, moedeloze fysiek.
