- Description:
- Rond 1500 schilderen heel wat kunstenaars nog in de traditie van de Vlaamse Primitieven. Zo ook Colijn de Coter die in het bijzonder schatplichtig is aan de Meester van Flémalle en aan Rogier van der Weyden. Zijn oeuvre, dat hoofdzakelijk uit altaarstukken bestaat, heeft een belangrijke schakelfunctie tussen traditie en vernieuwing. Het is gekenmerkt door zowel een archaïserende stijl met monumentale figuren als door innovatievere elementen zoals een vereenvoudigde techniek, de weergave van een correcter perspectief en de meer decoratieve en formele behandeling van het onderwerp. Dit schilderij met De aanbidding door de koningen (of de wijzen) is één van de weinige werken van deze belangrijke Brusselse meester bekend in Vlaanderen.
