Description:

Vanaf het midden van de jaren 1930 begint Paul Delvaux onder invloed van het werk van Giorgio De Chirico met decor en perspectief te experimenteren. Dezelfde motieven komen vanaf die periode dikwijls in zijn werk terug: uitdrukkingsloze figuren, verstard in theatrale bewegingen, tempels uit de klassieke oudheid of de renaissance, met een expliciet, soms ingewikkeld perspectief en badend in een onnatuurlijk licht. Het decor in grijstinten met slechts enkele kleuraccenten verhoogt de irreële sfeer die in een schilderij als De trap wordt opgeroepen. Ironie – toch een typisch kenmerk van het surrealisme – vinden we bij Delvaux niet terug. Zijn plechtige en wat onderkoelde kunst is eerder verwant met het magisch realisme van de Nederlandse kunstenaar Albert Carel Willink.
