- Tijdens de jaren 1897-99 ontwierp George Minne enkele werken die aansluiten bij de sierlijke art-nouveaustijl, zoals 'De kleine gekwetste' uit 1898 en 'De baadster' uit 1899. Ook het houten beeld 'De metselaar' uit 1897, oorspronkelijk bedoeld voor een traphal in een woning ontworpen door Victor Horta, sluit aan bij een trend in de art-nouveau waarin beeldhouwkunst een decoratieve functie in de binnenhuisinrichting krijgt. Het motief is afgeleid van een tekening van een rustende boer.
