Description:

De bewening van Christus is een kopie naar een verloren gegaan werk van Hugo van der Goes. Deze voor die tijd ongewone compositie is een van zijn meest gekopieerde werken: de figuren ten halve lijve zijn als het ware in close-up weergegeven en vullen het gehele beeldvlak, wat de dramatische kracht van de voorstelling verhoogt. Nikodemus en Jozef van Arimathea dragen het ontzielde lichaam van Christus, terwijl de apostel Johannes zich troostend over Maria, de moeder Gods, ontfermt. Bovenaan rechts zien we Maria Magdalena. De uitzonderlijke kwaliteit van de kopie plaatst het werk in de onmiddellijke omgeving van de meester.
