- Description:
- In Het atelier van de schilder bracht Edgard Tytgat zijn vrouw Maria en de beeldhouwer Charles Leplae in beeld. Beiden zijn in tegenlicht geplaatst, waardoor hun individuele trekken niet te zien zijn. Hoewel de twee figuren centraal weergegeven zijn, gaat het hier veeleer om het atelier zelf. Daarin speelt het venster een dominante rol. Vanuit dit venster observeerde Tytgat de wereld rondom hem. Heel wat kunstenaars portretteerden hun atelier, maar opmerkelijk voor dit atelierzicht is het ontbreken van bijvoorbeeld een schildersezel. Het ziet er eerder uit als een studeerkamer en tegelijk als een soort uitkijkpost voor de kleine wereld die hem steeds opnieuw inspireerde.
