- Description:
- De geportretteerde man is als borststuk weergegeven. Het contrast tussen de lichte achtergrond en de figuur in donkere kledij versterkt de dieptewerking. Hij draagt een wambuis met hoge, gesteven kraag. Zijn halflange haardracht was omstreeks 1650 uit de mode. Ook zijn hoed met brede rand was toen gedemodeerd. De geportretteerde behoorde dus niet bepaald tot de progressieve lieden uit de Gouden Eeuw. Wellicht voelde hij zich meer thuis onder strenge conservatieven bij wie lange haren bekend stonden als ‘vruchtbaer neetennest’. Rond 1635 woedde een heftige discussie over het dragen van lange haren, bekend als de ‘hairige quaestie’.
