- Description:
- Gustave De Smet portretteerde zichzelf meermaals samen met zijn vrouw. In 1927 woonde het echtpaar nog in Deurle, een dorp aan de Leie. De lage toren van het Romaanse kerkje van Deurle is hier in het schematisch aangegeven landschap ook herkenbaar. Het tafereel is opgebouwd als een puzzel van geometrische kleurvlakken en concrete elementen, zoals de personages zelf en de gestileerde vaas met bloemen. Die werkwijze is typisch voor het oeuvre van De Smet in de jaren 1926–1928. De kunstenaar maakte dikwijls verscheidene versies van eenzelfde onderwerp. Van dit portret bestaat ook een versie in olieverf.
