- Net als Constant Permeke, Frits van den Berghe en Gustave de Smet studeert de beeldhouwer en graveur Jozef Cantré (1886-1952) aan de Gentse Academie. Aanvankelijk vertonen Cantrés beelden de invloed van George Minne en Constantin Meunier. Van 1918 tot 1930 verblijft Cantré in ballingschap in Nederland (Blaricum en Oosterwijk). Hij werkt er in 'taille directe', rechtstreeks in hout of steen, in een constructief expressionistische stijl. In 1930 keert hij naar België terug en vestigt zich in de buurt van Gent. Onder invloed van de algemene neorealistische tendens in de jaren voor de Tweede Wereldoorlog, evolueert Cantré naar een synthese tussen geometrische vereenvoudiging en dynamisch realisme. Vanaf het midden van de jaren '20 legt Jozef Cantré zich toe op monumentaal werk. De dichter is een bronzen versie van het Monument voor de dichter René de Clercq dat zich op het kerkhof te Lage Vuurse in Nederland bevindt. Het monument dateert van 1934 en is uitgevoerd in groene steen. De sobere, bijna architectonische vormgeving wordt gedragen door een innerlijk kracht en een poëtisch elan wat de dichter de allure van een ziener verleent.
