- Zoals Gustave De Smet en Frits Van den Berghe schilderde Constant Permeke aanvankelijk impressionistisch. Het kleurgebruik en de suggestieve toetsen in dit duinengezicht herinneren nog aan die periode. Maar de krachtige factuur, het gebruik van de matière als uitdrukkingsmiddel en constructief element, de vormvereenvoudiging en de impulsieve schilderwijze, al wat voor het expressionistisch oeuvre van Permeke zo kenmerkend zou worden, is hier in deze kleine en eenvoudige studie al aanwezig.
