Description:

Een schilderes toont zichzelf aan het werk in vroeg-19de-eeuwse kledij. Kunstenaars gebruiken deze pose al sinds de 17de eeuw voor hun zelfportret. Dat ze tijdens het schilderen nooit dergelijke rijke kleren draagt, is niet van belang. Het gaat om uitstraling. Wie deze vrouw is, weten we niet. Vanaf 1780 volgen gegoede vrouwen vaak schilderles, maar tot de academie worden ze niet toegelaten. Soms blijft hun kunst beperkt tot de privésfeer, soms werken ze in grotere ateliers. Enkelingen worden zelfstandig kunstenaar. Zoals bij zovele tijdgenotes, verdwijnt de naam van deze schilderes echter in de geschiedenis. Terwijl ze ons hier net dwingt om gezien te worden...
