- Oude dame met maskers is geschilderd op het hoogtepunt van James Ensors zogeheten fantastische periode, ook wel zijn maskerperiode genoemd. Oorspronkelijk voerde de kunstenaar het portret in opdracht uit. Nadat het schilderij werd geweigerd, toverde Ensor het om tot een overvolle maskerade waarin de korte perspectief en de opeenstapeling van figuren de dramatische spanning versterken. De geportretteerde is misschien Neel Doff, de Nederlandse dichteres en publiciste. De zachte uitstraling van de oudere dame contrasteert fel met de grimmige maskers en het sinistere doodshoofd die zich rond haar verdringen. Het agressieve, contrastrijke koloriet van felle roden en groenen beklemtonen het dreigende karakter van de spottende maskers.
