- Evenals zijn vriend Frits Van den Berghe vluchtte Gustave De Smet bij het uitbreken van de Eerste Wereldoorlog naar Nederland. Hij vestigde zich tot 1920 achtereenvolgens in Laren en Blaricum in Het Gooi, ten oosten van Amsterdam. In de laatste twee jaar van zijn verblijf in Nederland ging De Smet ook geregeld naar Amsterdam, waar hij tijdelijk een zolderkamer huurde die hij als atelier gebruikte. Hij schilderde er bijna uitsluitend vrouwenfiguren en stillevens naast stadsgezichten, gezien vanuit zijn dakvenster. Daar ontstond ook De groene koepelkerk in Amsterdam, een van de meest voldragen expressionistische werken uit die periode. De dynamische interpretatie van het stadsbeeld toont een verwantschap met het Duits expressionisme en het Franse kubisme. In zijn Hollandse periode gebruikte Gustave De Smet zelden een helder coloriet. Hij drukte zich veeleer uit in een harmonie van warme herfstkleuren en zwarten, stevig, met brede toetsen in een zware verfmassa neergezet.
