- Op deze vlotte studie, een der meest informele uit zijn oeuvre, combineerde Ensor de voorstelling van twee tekeningen uit de reeks “De aureolen van Christus”: links “Christus aan het volk getoond”, rechts “De intrede van Christus in Jeruzalem” (respectievelijk inv. 1988-C en 1963-E). Ondanks het schetsmatige karakter van de tekening kan men er de meeste elementen van de twee grote composities in herkennen, bijvoorbeeld de architectuur, de figuren in de menigte en de kop van de Franse politicus en filosoof Emile Littré. De dubbele schets heeft ook de proportionele verdeling gemeen met de grote tekeningen. Hieruit kan men afleiden dat de kleine studie wellicht ontstond na de grote tekeningen en niet als voorstudie. Ensor behield de algemene idee van de reeks “De aureolen van Christus” – de lichtkernen te midden van een overdadige architectuur en mensenmassa – in een uiterst dynamisch geheel van los over het blad verspreide lijnen, krullen en accenten. De twee oorspronkelijke taferelen werden geïntegreerd tot een in de breedte gedacht massatoneel, dat zodoende een overgang vormt van de eerste, in de hoogte uitgewerkte “Intrede van Christus in Jeruzalem”, naar het latere schilderij, “De intrede van Christus in Brussel”, dat in 1888 ontstond (Malibu, The J. Paul Getty Museum).
