- Constantin Meunier is voornamelijk bekend om zijn realistische sculpturen. Internationale vermaardheid verwierf hij met de uitbeelding van mijnwerkers en landarbeiders. Meunier legde vooral de nadruk op hun fysieke kracht. Voor hem primeerde de verheerlijking van de arbeid boven sociale bewogenheid: De maaier toont zowel het ritme van de beweging als de inspanning van de arbeid.
