- Description:
- In de figuur van Christus vond Ensor een symbool van onschuld, vervolgde waarheid en van onderworpen goedheid aan de aanvallen van een vijandige massa. Voor de kunstenaar was de tekening dan ook een aanleiding om zijn eigen conflictrijke verhouding met de samenleving tot uiting te brengen. Vanaf de reeks "De aureolen van Christus", waartoe deze tekening behoort, blijft de Christus-thematiek zeer belangrijk in het werk van Ensor en in sommige werken is het duidelijk dat hij zich met de Christusfiguur identificeert. De belangstelling voor de figuur van Christus is op zichzelf niet uitzonderlijk in deze periode. Net zoals vele generatiegenoten werd Ensor geboeid door de Christusfiguur als revolutionair of als anarchist.
