- Gustave Van de Woestyne, die voor de oorlog behoorde tot de symbolistische schilders van de eerste Latemse groep, bleef niet ongevoelig voor het modernisme en gaandeweg nam de kunstenaar expressionistische en postkubistische stijlelementen in zijn werk op. Fuga uit 1925 is een van zijn meest expressionistische werken. De muzikale titel verwijst naar de meerstemmigheid van de compositie. Centraal staat de boer, omgeven door die elementen die zijn leven bepalen en inhoud geven: het huis, de kerk, de dieren en de natuur. De vormen zijn sterk vereenvoudigd en herleid tot grote contrasterende kleurvlakken in een collageachtige opbouw.
