Description:

Met Ecce homo greep Constantin Meunier terug naar een bekend motief uit de christelijke iconografie: de gefolterde Christus aan het volk getoond. Opmerkelijk is het introverte en tegelijk expressieve karakter van het beeld. Meunier combineerde de uitdrukking van psychologische ontreddering met die van fysiek lijden. Meunier was actief als schilder, beeldhouwer, tekenaar, lithograaf en illustrator. De grootste faam verwierf hij echter als beeldhouwer. Van Ecce homo zijn nog drie versies bekend. Meunier zelf schreef in een brief dat hij maximum 10 exemplaren van het beeld in brons wilde laten gieten opdat het werk niet ‘in het alledaagse commerciële circuit’ terecht zou komen.
