- Het behalen van een medaille op een tentoonstelling of een decoratie in een officiële orde gaven, net zoals jubileumverjaardagen en andere feestelijke gebeurtenissen, in de 19de en vroege 20ste eeuw steevast aanleiding tot het inrichten van groots opgezette banketten. Bij deze diners werd aan de spijskaarten veel aandacht besteed, en ze werden regelmatig door bevriende kunstenaars in ets of lithografie verlucht. Van Ensor zijn twee dergelijke menukaarten bekend, "De spijskaart voor Charles Vos" en "De spijskaart voor Ernest Rousseau". De eerste spijskaart maakte Ensor naar aanleiding van de feestelijke inhuldiging van de 'Vos-Hall', de galerie en veilingzaal die Ensors vriend Charles Vos op 26 december 1896 in Brussel opende. "De spijskaart voor Ernest Rousseau" maakte Ensor ter gelegenheid van het huwelijk van Ernest Rousseau Jr., de zoon van zijn Brusselse vriend Ernest Rousseau.
