- Ensor concipieerde “De aanbidding door de herders” geheel in de geest van de door hem bewonderde oude meesters, zoals Peter Paul Rubens en Rembrandt. De verwijzingen zijn eerder algemeen: de lichtkern rond het kind en de situering van het tafereel in het houten bouwsel kan men bijvoorbeeld vergelijken met Rembrandts “De aanbidding door de herders” (Londen, National Gallery). Ensors prent is een vrije bewerking van de gelijknamige krijttekening uit 1886 (Brussel, Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België, inv. 4192). In de prent omringt de kunstenaar het tafereel met staaltjes van Vlaams realisme en Ensoriaanse satire.
