- Volgens apocriefe teksten bezocht Christus na zijn kruisdood het voorgeborchte van de hel om er Adam en de rechtvaardigen te verlossen. Dit verhaal bood kunstenaars door de eeuwen heen de mogelijkheid om goed en kwaad met elkaar te confronteren. Deze merkwaardige episode boeide ook Ensor. In zijn ets laat Christus zich gewillig door twee duivels voor de troon van Satan leiden. De kunstenaar gaf zijn eigen versie aan het verhaal in de uitvoerige titel met gefantaseerde namen. De prent is een vereenvoudigde versie van de gelijknamige tekening uit 1886 (Brussel, Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België, inv. 7660). Hetzelfde thema behandelde Ensor in de prent “Christus daalt neer in de hel”, eveneens ontstaan in 1895 (inv. 1998-B-103).
