- Van kindsaf was Ensor vertrouwd met maskers, via het souvenirwinkeltje van zijn ouders. Zelf zou hij ze naderhand ook verzamelen. In vergelijking tot zijn schilderkunstige oeuvre is het opvallend dat de maskerthematiek slechts twee etsen domineert, namelijk "Geërgerde maskers" en "Geïntrigeerde maskers" (inv. 1998-B-128). De eerst vermelde prent is gebaseerd op het gelijknamige schilderij, dat Ensor weliswaar ‘1883’ dateerde maar waarvan de maskers waarschijnlijk een latere overschildering zijn (Brussel, Koninklijke Musea voor Schone Kunsten van België). Een vergrote versie van de prent “Geërgerde maskers” werd ingelast in de luxe-uitgave van de Ensor-monografie van Grégoire Le Roy uit 1922.
