Description:

Met de steun van de familie Ohara vertrok de Japanse kunstenaar Torajiro Kojima in 1908 naar Europa. Via Parijs belandde hij in Gent waar hij aan de academie studeerde. In deze jaren onderging hij verschillende Europese invloeden. In Lentelicht zien we de sporen van het blijmoedige luminisme van Emile Claus, vooral in de schaduwwerking maar ook in de techniek. De harde lichtwerking ontleende Kojima aan het Franse impressionisme. In het helle koloriet is dan weer de invloed van het fauvisme aan te wijzen. Met die verschillende invalshoeken kan Kojima als voorbeeld gelden voor tal van Japanse kunstenaars die in het begin van de twintigste eeuw de snel evoluerende Europese kunst terug thuis in Japan verwerkten in de zogenaamde ‘Western style painting’.
