Description:

In 1920 woonde Frits Van den Berghe enige tijd in bij Gustave De Smet in Blaricum, een landelijk dorp ten oosten van Amsterdam. Hun huis noemden ze naar het kasteel van Reynaert de Vos ‘Malpertuus’, synoniem voor een gastvrij toevluchtsoord. Heel toepasselijk voor de plaats waar het echtpaar De Smet als banneling tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog verbleef. Hier zien we Gustave en Gusta De Smet bij een tafel die het centrum vormt van een symmetrisch opgebouwde compositie. De kleur is ondergeschikt aan dat vormschema en vertoont hier en daar zorgvuldig aangebrachte kleuraccenten die de sombere, avondlijke sfeer verlevendigen. Van den Berghe schilderde hier niet, zoals gebruikelijk, met zware verfmaterie maar met dunne tempera. Het werk illustreert zijn evolutie naar een constructief expressionisme waarin de invloed van het Franse kubisme duidelijk naar voor treedt.
