- In het expressionisme is de houtsnede een even belangrijk uitdrukkingsmiddel als de schilder- en beeldhouwkunst. De techniek dwingt de kunstenaar tot een krachtige tekening zonder gevoelige nuanceringen, tot essentiële contrasten zonder kleurschakeringen. Een aantal kunstenaars, zoals Jozef Cantré (1890-1957), Gustave De Smet (1877-1943) en Frits Van den Berghe (1883-1939) geven de voorkeur aan linoleum, een materiaal dat zich gemakkelijker laat bewerken. In hun vormgeving sluiten ze sterk aan bij het Duits expressionisme. De houtsneden en linosnedes van De Smet, negentien in totaal, zijn meestal gebaseerd op zijn eigen schilderijen.
